The most shocking thing about IW.I isnt that it portrays a sitting president as a charismatic simpleton with out of control daddy issues, its that the films director Oliver Stone actually seems to like George W. Bush. Im not saying he thinks hes a good President or that he agrees with well, just about anything Bush has done during his term in office...

These days, when every other reality show focuses on a random actor, and even 10-year-olds know what agents do, a Hollywood satire like IWhat Just HappenedI feels old-fashioned, tired, and not particularly on-point. Written by Art Linson, producer of movies like IFight ClubI and IInto the WildI, the movie is deeply entrenched within the minutiae of Hollywood, to the point that it loses all sight of what might make it interesting

ISynecdoche New YorkI could be written off as navel-gazing if its scope werent so huge, or forgotten as an arty disaster if not for the occasional moments of clarity and heartbreak that made Kaufmans other screenplays, like IEternal Sunshine of the Spotless MindI, such a success. The truly committed will find something redeeming in this jumble.

ISex DriveI is a raunchy road trip comedy that comes with a few surprises, though probably not the ones the filmmakers intended. Its no surprise that the movie goes for sweet romance near the end, or that its characters says endlessly filthy things to each other for an hour and a half. All that is par for the course in the comedy world that Judd Apatow has created in his image.

IQuarantineI is ISaved By The BellI and IShaftI and shoulder pads in womens clothing. Its Ross Perot briefly leading the 1992 Presidential Election and John Lennons bed-in for peace. Its Hoovervilles, IWho Wants To Be A Millionaire?I, and Andy Warhols soup cans. Just as Bret Michaels screaming Nothin But A Good Time in black spandex...

Adventure kids movies all end the same way, but the good ones have some spark that makes them worth following through until the end. Almost entirely humorless and derivative, despite its wonderfully inventive set, ICity of EmberI is little more than a retread of the best movies the 80s had to offer. Yes, its a shame no one is making movies like IGooniesI anymore, but this pale imitation...

IBody of LiesI will probably get credit as the first Iraq War movie that people actually bother to see. Its misleading, though, to assume that the movie has anything to do with politics in general, or that war specifically; its mostly a thriller involving double-crosses and moral ambiguity, using the bombed-out desert as its backdrop. The movie is fine by your general thriller standards...

Sue Monk Kidds novel and its adaptation by Gina Prince-Bythewood avoids stereotyping and easy answers, presenting a coming-of-age story that goes easy on the life lessons and forced moments of racial understanding. Crowded with vibrant characters and a wealth of talent, ISecret Life of BeesI is cuddly enough for IOprahI but never cloying...

ILet the Right One InI is scheduled for a Hollywood remake, an even worse idea than most of the remakes that get cooked up. The Swedish movies careful combination of nostalgia, romance, sci-fi and occasional violence will almost definitely be impossible to reproduce, especially without Leanderssons dark, spooky eyes and Hadebrants washed-out youthful face.

Ernie Davis was the first African-American to win the Heisman Trophy. His number is retired by the Cleveland Browns, and hes a member of the College Football Hall Of Fame. Now, hes the recipient of his very own aggressively passable biopic. You can go ahead and order those achievements in any way you see fit.

IAn American Caroli isnt likely to ruffle any political feathers and it lacks anything else that might make it stand out. With a release date that fails to capitalize on either the Fourth of July or Christmas, this adaptation of Dickens classic is just a little bit of noise during a political season that already has too tight a grip on most peoples attention for a piece of fluff like this to be noticed.

Last night I sat in my living room, watching Americas current Vice Presidential nominees argue over our failing economy. This afternoon I walked into a movie theater and paid to see a movie about pets owned by people so wealthy, that their dogs collars are worth more than Ill ever make in my entire life. There has to be a connection in there somewhere.

Perhaps this middling film might play better in England, where audiences can pick up on cultural cues invisible to us dumb Yanks. But for those of us here Stateside, its hard to buy the conceit that the little guy in the big city will triumph with integrity. We know better. Out here in the real world, intelligence and wit are no match for towering stupidity.

Early on in IReligulousI, Bill Maher throws up a bar chart illustrating the number of people in America who are non-religious. That number is 16, more than blacks, more than Jews, more than numerous other minority groups who seem to have no problem making themselves heard and getting Congress to do their bidding. Maher wonders aloud why non-religious people are so underground...

A disjointed amalgamation of Kirk Cameron fireman scenes and how to go soul-winning leaflets, IFireproofI is at least sixty-five percent hard Christianity pitch, but in between all of that proselytizing, theres a below-average--but not terrible-- family drama waiting to break out. Too bad it was smothered to death by preachy asides and a pathological need to thank El Shaddai for creating all of us.
